Hi Cupcakes... so I have a new blog in addition but separate from Cupcake Provocateur. Cooking with Elegance is something I have been wanting to start for quite sometime. On a personal level I love cooking and the aesthetics of presentation. My goal is to combine flavor and style and share my stories, ideas and musings along the way. This will be a very interactive blog.... I want anyone that is interested to share their feedback, ideas, recipes and hostess tips as well.

Interview with America's Sweethart Jenny Cross!

Not to long ago, I was watching the Food Network as I always do and I came across a new show called "America's Worst Cooks". Not one for Reality shows even of the Food Variety, something made or should I say "someone" made me stop and take notice. This person was Jenny Cross, she stood out like a diamond in the rough. Amongst the chaos of competing she looked like a pinup queen of an era gone by, however she might knock your lights out if you piss her off, but at least she'll do it in a cocktail dress and a wink in her eye! She was the sole reason I watched the show, every week I would keep my fingers crossed that she would make it to the next round. Though Jenny did not win the competition, she did however win the hearts of many viewers. Jenny has shown that when life hands you lemons, you throw them right back! Jenny is an inspiration to all girls that think their dreams are unattainable, she proves that if your passion is strong enough that nothing can stand in your way.

When Jenny and I got in touch with each other, it was an instant connection of two gals that have a passion for food and all things vintage and allot of humor thrown in for good measure, with that combination how can you go wrong!

It is with great pleasure, that I am announcing Jenny Cross as our official Cupcake Provocateur Spokesmodel! Below are images from our photo shoot with Jenny modeling our aprons and cupcakes, last month at Sweet Mama's Kitchen in Northport, NY (little fact, they have the best stuffed French Toast)! Jenny Cross Short Bio:

The last moment I was ever seen on TV, I was sobbing over not winning Food

Network's "Worst Cooks in America. That was me not too long ago, but the sad

pinup you once saw is just a distant memory. When it was announced, I felt

as if my entire world crumbled, that something that I had worked so hard for

was taken from me in a split second. But, something happened when Worst

Cooks aired, that took me completely by surprise. It was no secret that I

came from a troubled past, and even on the show I wasn't in a stable place.

I was expecting viewers to see that and dislike me, but what America saw was

a young girl that was driven to give herself better by chasing her dream. I

had failed to realize that even though I didn't win, I still learned so much

about cooking, and had been given the opportunity of a lifetime. I began to

learn about the restaurant industry hands on by working in various kitchens

then, going into business for myself as a Personal Chef/Caterer. One of the

unique abilities I've learned is to take a meal that would typically be

considered "junk food" and by substituting a few ingredients, I'd serve a

health conscious meal while keeping all the flavor. While I support a

healthy lifestyle, cooking with restrictions..... isn't really my style.

Although I look great in a chef coat, my hair flowers and fishnets were

collecting dust. This is why I am so honored to announce that I, Jenny

Cross, will be Cupcake Provocateurs spokesmodel. Cupcake Provocateur and

myself, are a match made in retro glam heaven! With the adorable aprons,

delicious cupcakes, and an arsonal of housewares that would make any chore

fabulous, I cannot be prouder to represent such a wonderful company. Cynthia

Lagudi, has captured everything I love about the traditional 50's housewife,

and created an ideal way to bring those values back into the everyday lives

of modern women with her Pinup couture. Not only have I personally worn them

for cooking and non cooking purposes...but I find myself truly enjoying the

experience of just wearing the flirty aprons. With the strings tied in the

perfect bow, and a fresh coat of red lipstick, I'm in the kitchen cooking up

my next culinary triumph.I will be featured at many different events serving

up all my favorite comfort food and proving that I'm NOT the worst cook

anymore in Cupcake Provocateur's sassy aprons.

How has life changed since the airing of America?s Worst Cooks?

Since the show, my life has been a quick u turn for the better! I vowed to

myself (even though I didn't win) that I would never carry a tray again, so I
began working as a chef in different restaurants around Philly to learn more
about the culinary industry. Soon I learned that maybe a restaurant chef
wasn't the best option because I really wanted to explore my own talents. I
wanted to see what I can do as well as experience what diners feel when they
taste my cooking. Being that I had so many family,friends, and fans wanting
me to prove that I wasn't a worst cook anymore, I decided to start charging!
Then I went into business working as a personal chef/caterer to not just
only bring some tasty food, but a rockin good time as well! I developed an
eclectic mix of clientele, one being the owner of a prestigious antique shop
in Philadelphia. I absolutely loved working for the family as well as in the
antique shop. I just loved being around so many beautiful pieces of art and
history. With my love of all things vintage and my strong work ethic, the
owner gave me full control over his 2nd store called The Annex. Not only do
I sell antiques, but I sell vintage clothing, jewelry, hats, and furniture,
that I've personally picked out. Even though I manage the store, I still
cook, and soon I will be selling Pirate Jenny junk food out of the store as
well.

What was the most important thing you learned about yourself during and

since the show?

That's a GOOD question! Before the show aired, I thought I was going to be

the most HATED cast member. The one that everyone wanted to vote off haha!
Afterwards I saw that I had the most unexpected fans like, a soccer mom and
her teen princess daughter. Now, here I am, tattooed, rockabilly,rebel type
young girl, aka any mother's worst nightmare, and I have the soon to be prom
queen and her mother gushing to me that I'm their favorite person from the
show. It really amazed me the fact that viewers saw past my look, and saw
someone who would do anything to pursue her dreams. I never thought people
saw that in me, nor did I even realize that in myself. I learned that people
DO see that there is allot more to me than the way I look, and I needed to
truly give myself credit for that. Truly learning that looking a certain way
doesn't make you what you are on the inside, but its what you do in this
life and always putting your best foot forward. When I realized that my
image, was just that, I started to feel a lot more confident about myself
and my own talents in the kitchen. If I can rock a pompadour and fishnets
while making a chocolate torte for the social elite of Philadelphia, and
have them praise me for it, then there's nothing stopping me from cooking
for the queen of England! I'm proud of the fact that I am an individual, and
that all types of people praise me for what I can do. I just so happen to do
it with style!

One thing I admire about you the most, is your strength to prevail through
some tough situations, just like a modern day Cinderella.... How do you stay
so strong and what advice can you give to girls and women who are currently

trying to reach their goals?

You pegged me completely on that one! Like Langsthon Hughes once said "Life

ain't been no crystal stair", it has been very much that way for me. I've
had a rough past and it continued to be rocky up until the show aired. I've
always identified myself very much with Cinderella, growing up and
currently. I look at the opportunity that Worst Cooks gave me as almost my
fairy godmother casting a temporary magic spell, and now I had to find a way
to make my dreams come true. I had all the skills I needed, all I needed to
do was realize that my goals were allot closer than I imagined. Now
opportunities like this doesn't happen to everyone, but I stayed true to
myself and what I wanted. The fire I had to win couldn't compare to the
blazing inferno I had to learning everything I could about cooking. The
burning desire to be a the best chef I can be, has kept me strong Believing
in yourself, and always doing your best, is what helped me move away from my
past and on to my future success. I am still working very hard to be the
next Julia Childs, but I don't forget who I am and where I came from. The
name, Pirate Jenny is actually, a song from the Three Penny opera, about a
pirate queen turned Inn slave, that ends up showing her captors what she
REALLY can do after years of neglect. Kind of like a darker Cinderella, kind
of like...me! I'm not what you expect when you think of Cinderella, but more
of a Pirate Jenny! HAHA! Just a little saltier than the blonde haired sugary
princess!
No matter what life throws at me, I always keep a smile on my face and try
my hardest, because when everything's said and done, if the worst thing
people can say is "I don't like her hair", then you're doing pretty good!

I heard through the grapevine that you have always had a desire too become a

professional chef, what are your current goals and happenings for the future

Chef Jenny?

Hmmm.... professional sounds a little serious to me and I don't think its

my flavor. I've never wanted to be a master chef, or earn a Michelin Star,
but to truly be an artist with food. The reason I want to be a chef more
than anything is because food is art for all of your senses. Its easy to
remember the last best meal you've ever eaten not only for the taste, but
for the memory it gave you. Same thing goes for a bad meal as well. Good or,
bad, food makes you feel, its one of the strongest senses of memory that we
have. I find that the food I enjoy making the most is homestyle classics
with a modern twist. Taking the junk food and family dinners that we all
loved as children and creating your wildest food fantasy! If you're going to
chow down on junk food, it'd better be worth it! So by taking the best
ingredients to make the most delicious snack food and allowing the diner to
make it EXACTLY what they're craving but only could make in solitude. I want
my food to reflect who I am as a person; unique,bold and a glimpse into a
time once passed. The culmination of everything that I love about cooking
and food is reflected in "Pirate Jenny's Pogey Bait and Home Cookin".
Unusual comfort food that you can customize or have catered to your event. I
plan to have the website with menus to place orders soon, but still a few
more bugs to work out. If you can't wait to try Pirate Jenny's, I will be at
food events handing out samples and featuring the menu along with my

personal chef services.

We all know Jenny Cross is sugar and spice and everything nice but lets dig

deeper....If Jenny Cross was a recipe...what ingredients would be used to

make her?

I want to say piss and vinegar but, that's not very nice. I would say

that I'm all the aspects of a deep fried Snickers. I would say I'm
sweet,decadent, and romantic like the chocolate on the outside. But, once
you take a bite you get the salty,hard crunch of the peanuts thats bonded by
the tough chewiness of the caramel but with a soft nougat center. Great by
itself, but being that I have to push everything almost to the point of
ridiculous, it needs to be dunked in a heavy batter and cooked in fat. Kind
of like how I wrap myself in leopard print faux fur with my teased up hair
and looking just trashy enough to be intriguing. I'm like a familiar guilty
pleasure but a guilty pleasure is still a pleasure. Once the batter crisps,
all those ingredients come together in such a spectacular way that you can't
believe you're liking something this bad so much. Such as myself, on sight
you may expect the worst, but give me a chance and you'll end up liking more
than you realized.

If we were able to read your planner... what is an average day like for

Jenny Cross?

Average day? What?s that? HAHA! Not in my vocabulary!

Who or what inspires you the most?

It may sound harsh but, my biggest inspiration is all the people who said I

would never work in the culinary industry and proving them wrong. Everyone
who underestimates my determination, and tries to bring me down, only
inspires me to try harder. "Live to Fight" is tattooed on my arm for a GOOD

reason!

Tell us a little something that people may not know about you?

Something you may not know was that I was a Girl Scout for 10 years! I often

ask myself, "where did it all go wrong?" HAHA!

Mama Cynthia's Banana Bread

Ingredients

* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
* 1/2 cup butter at room temperature
* 2 large eggs
* 3 ripe bananas
* 3 tablespoons milk
* 1 teaspoon cinnamon
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup finely chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
Cream the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time

In another bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Mix in the milk. In
another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder,cinnamon, baking
soda and salt.

Add the banana mixture to the butter and sugar and whip until
combined. Add dry ingredients, mixing till blended.

Pour batter into a greased and floured pan and bake 50 minutes to an
hour. Test to see if bread is done by inserting a tooth pick, if it
comes out clean the bread is done.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Missy Miss Photography came to be?
I have been a fan of pin up girls for a long time! I've loved Marilyn Monroe since I was 13 (I'm 30 now). When I started playing on the Internet is when I started to see all the pin up girls of today, I wanted to be one of them, I wanted to take their pictures..I had great ideas for photo shoots..I really wanted to be apart of it because I felt like It fit who I was..I grew up looking at my mothers old photographs and watching the movies from the 80's that were supposed to take place in the 50's, how could you not fall in love with that time period..The women were so classy, the clothing was amazing, the cars were unbelievable..It just seemed to be a very magical time..I wish I had been a teenager back then! Where I fit in best in the scene today, was behind the camera, so I posted on myspace that I was looking for 15 girls to shoot for free, when I got the feedback is when I invested in my *nice* camera and started building props, it was then I had to start charging.

What is the atmosphere like on a typical Missy Miss photo shoot ?
I know a lot of girls come over and are scared, they've never done anything like this before...I've been in front of the camera too, and I know how weird it can be...I do a lot of my own hair and makeup, so the time while I'm doing it I get to know these girls..They get to know me..I assure them that everything will be okay..I wouldn't do them wrong, not everything ends up on the net and if they want to be, but want to see the photos before posted, I will run it past them. They warm up to me a little and when we're done with hair and makeup and it's time to shoot, I will show them poses and things to do...Where to look..What looks best..I will praise them when they're doing it right and then after that it's easy..The girl is more confident and the rest of the shoot goes great...I often make friends with a lot of these girls.

If they've been modeling for a while, I used to get a bit nervous, but I have worked with so many people now it's a lot easier..I'm a fan of some of these girls, so it's exciting!:)

As far as what's going on while I shoot..I shoot out of my home..The master bedroom is my studio..It's not small and it's not big, it's good enough for right now..I shut the door and kick the animals out, unless someone wants to shoot with one of them.;) I have a closet filled with props, almost every color seamless paper backdrop, tons of MAC makeup and I am building a vintage wardrobe right now!

How can a current or aspiring pin up model schedule a photo shoot with you?
I like to do the whole modelmayhem and myspace thing..Myspace has made it very easy for me..I like to check out people before I let them come on over..I'd just say to send me a message..I message everyone back.:)

Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
I've got many, but they're secrets..;-) I've got to come up with some themes for some bigger names in the pin up world..It's a big deal to me..This is my life, my passion..I like to make everyone's shoot a bit different, but I am planning on working with some models that I've been a fan of for quite some time.

What are your future ambitions for yourself and Missy Miss Photography?
I want to move to LA, I took a trip there this summer and it was amazing..I didn't know if I would like it or not, but I had the best time in my life..LA is so inspiring, I need that.

I have so many things I want to do with this..I know calendars will be made..I want to publish a book of my work when I feel my port is what it should be..I'd like to have "Miss Missy" merch, some has already been made..I have teamed up with Racy La'Rue Apparel & some jewelry with the models has been made..Much more to come though!!!

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment thus far?
Making people happy..Giving women their self esteem back..I had a woman call me up crying one morning..She told me she had not felt that pretty since before she had her son a few years ago and how in love she was with her photos..It made me cry..I don't think it can get much better than that.

Getting published is very nice too..It's always nice to show your mother what you've done and sit back and look @ all the hard work and how it's paid off.

Your photography is some of the best I’ve seen around and your props and sets always seem to capture the essence of the 1940’s & 50’s....what would you say inspires a shoot from the conception to the last shoot?
Thank you! That means so much to me..Some girls come up with their own ideas, some I've had sitting in my head..I am always thinking..I can go somewhere and see a box and come up with a whole shoot..I get inspired at weird times, like when it's time to sleep...LA really inspired me though..Moves, clothing..Cars..I can look @ an object and base a whole shoot around it...I think my editing is what really gives it that vintage feel.

What advice do you have for all the rockabilly/pin up gals out there that are looking to become professional models?
NETWORK! Join every site! Learn how to do your hair and makeup, go to events, dress the part, pay photographers until you get offers from them to do it for free...I paid my dues..I think a lot of girls have too much pride to pay, but I have shot some girls that took off after..If you can't afford it, have a friend take your photos..Post all the time..Get and keep peoples attention..Stay humble!!

What has been one of your most memorable photo Shoots?
The crazy ones..Like I said, I become friends some of these girls..Sometimes we'll walk around and do location shoots..Hollywood was crazy, fun and amazing..I know I had some girls cracking up and they did the same for me..Laughing so hard it was hard
to even get a shot...I've had so many memorable shoots, it's hard to pick one!! I love what I do!

What is one thing that not many people know about you that you would like to share?
Before I started this I was very shy..Had social anxiety problems, but this has really brought me out of my shell.

fun, creative and retro..I don't know why that question was so hard..ha.

Interview With Frenchy of Kitten Koffin Zombies!

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Frenchy who is the creator and designer of Kitten Koffin Zombies Pinup Contests which are held monthly through her website www.kittenkoffinzombies.com. KKZ has become quite popular within the Pinup/Rockabilly world and with due cause! Frenchy is an acclaimed graphic artist, designer/creator of the KKZ yearly Calendar and Retro Raven herself. This is a must read for any pinup gal that is interested in the "Hot Pursuit" of retro inspired modeling!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Kitten Koffin Zombies came to be?
Well, I'm a graphic designer by day and work on materials like posters, brochures, websites, logos, etc for industries such as builders/real estate, medical, business to businesses, etc. I also spend a lot of time at home doing home improvements, going to car shows, spending time with my husband and hanging out with my 4 crazy cats.

My inspiration behind Kitten Koffin Zombies really started with a senior how project I did for art school about 5 years ago. It could have been whatever you were interested in (that I could spend the whole semester without driving myself crazy.) I picked a subject that I have been enthralled with for many years, the retro pinups of the past. I produced a book called “Making Cheesecake” which I asked my sister-in-law (Sundae St. Laurent) to model for. It touched on the basic steps on how a modern day girl could transform into a retro pinup, I produced and shot all the photos for a mini calendar. After graduation, I got busy with life and the career I went to school for, and my love for pinup art got pushed to the back-burner. Then in October 2006, I felt like I had to do something to bring that creative need that I had in college back into my life. That is when I started Kitten Koffin Zombies. I wanted a release from my everyday job that I could share my fascination with others who enjoyed it as much as I do. I wanted something for others like me would enjoy and participate in. Pinups are just so important to this culture.

I absolutely agree with you Frenchy... How do you think the role of pinup girl has changed from the 40’s & 50’s till today?
I think the pinup girl roll from yesterday and today hasn't changed. A pinup girl in my mind is a smart, confident, strong, beautiful (both inside and out) and an all around fun girl to be around. Pinup girls are the epitome of beauty. They are sweet, sexy, innocent, and mysterious all at the same time. They possess exotic good looks and shapely hourglass figures with pristine, radiant faces and fabulous hair.

They also do what they want Its a statement to women that they can be themselves and enjoy it. If you have a love and interest in something, it is important to appreciate its past. By knowing its roots, you can grow and evolve by adding your own twist.

What are the required aspects of becoming a Kitten Koffin Girl?
Well, in terms of photo requirements, we look for the following guidelines but any girl can be a Kitten Koffin Girl as long as they portray confidence in their photos and have a respect and knowledge of the retro pinup culture. We also love girls of all sizes. Our calendar and contests are not about what size or shape you are but how comfortable you feel with yourself and that really shows through in the photos submitted into the contest. You don't need to be a size 0 to be a Kitten Koffin Girl!

1. Photo Quality
* Images need to be focused
* Photo backgrounds- should be cohesive and consistent in the same shot
* Setting- watch for elements not needed in photo (i.e. extension
cords,electronics)
* lighting- use some standard pin up lighting techniques
* Images should be less grainy
* Photos taken should not be unnaturally skewed by camera lenses
2. Picture Elements/composition
3. Props should incorporate elements of the 40¹s-50¹s
4. Hair makeup should be more retro inspired
5. Posing/facial expressions- should mimic the pin ups
of Vargas, etc.
6. Clothing should be retro inspired.

(These suggestions are a standard KKZ list. Please use this purely as a guideline for our website only. KKZ does not judge Photos or photographers, we are simply stating our standards for our calendar so that we deliver the Quality of Service to our patrons. KKZ Staff)

I will need from you the model app (available on the website and my myspace blog), photo permission form (also on the website/myspace blog), copy of your drivers license (you MUST be 18 at time of entering), brief bio and 6 photos max of retro pinup styling. This look is based on the 1940s to 1950s looks of Vargas artwork or style icons like Bettie Page, etc (see above list). You can also see some samples of the past winners in the Past Pinups section of the website to see the “look” and “style” I'm going for in the contest and review the above. Just putting on a corset doesn't cut it. You should have your hair and makeup retro styled as well as your surroundings. I’ve noticed that professional photos help in the contest but its not a must. How does the voting system work for a KKZ contest?
The voting system is pretty simple. Basically, a voter needs to create an account in order to vote on the site. Once they create their account, they will receive a confirmation email. They need to click on a link in the confirmation email to confirm their account. Once they do that, they can vote once every 24 hours in our system. Voters cannot vote more then once from the same ip and login and results are counted immediately.

Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
I am actually working on putting together a car show and fashion show for Forrestal Village in Princeton NJ on October 10th-so make sure you go if your in the area! Also, the calendar is going into production soon so I have to wrap everything up and get it over to the printer. I am also working on updating the website and the myspace page for KKZ for next year's contest submissions. So much to do and so little time!

What are your future ambitions for yourself and KKZ?
One of these days, we would love to put on pinup contests at events. We would love to get more products on the online store as well as become a bigger online resource for models, photographers and makeup artists in the pinup community. We would also love to start an online e-zine that would include articles on photographers, clothing companies, feature models and makeup tips. One of these days, we'll get there!

Well I think you are well on your way...What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment thus far?
I think the greatest accomplishment so far has been putting on the calendar pinup contests and having the calendar produced to give retro pinup models out there a chance to start somewhere or to further their career by gaining additional exposure in the industry. Its a great way to get your name out there and get noticed with companies as well as network with other photographers and makeup artists. We promote the calendar through many avenues and have gained some great exposure for both KKZ and the models in the calendar and contests.

What advice do you have for all the rockabilly/pin up gals out there that are looking to become professional models?
I've actually been asked this a couple times from models. I would suggest researching your favorite pinup photographers and if you like their work, book a shoot. Some photographers don’t do tfp and even though this is a great way to inexpensively build your portfolio, its worth the money to pay! Some photographers will even do tfp if they know their photo of you will get additional exposure if it will be in a magazine, an online zine or if a clothing company will use it.

Also, do as much free shoots for clothing companies as you can while building up your portfolio. Some times, clothing companies will do trade for photos for the items you are modeling. Start small and build from there! Building your name in the industry is key so if you can have a website or myspace page, have one with your modeling portfolio, sizes and resume on there. Also, do link and banner exchanges with companies you like. Doing trade like this will draw more people to you. Get out there, go to events and enter pinup contests.

I see that you have a passion for helping our troops....Tell us a little about how KKZ has been helping and how others can get involved?
Yes, we have been sending calendars every year to troops overseas and we really enjoy getting letters from troops saying how much they appreciate it and how it makes their time there seem less intense. There are a lot of pinup companies that support troops so try to get involved no matter what! You can send care packages.

Orzo & Turkey Stuffed Tomatoes

Today was such a beautiful day...I could tell that Summer is drawing to a close when I felt the slight cool breeze touch my face as I picked what might be the last of my Summer tomatoes. Todays recipe is inspired by the end of Summer, the beginning of Fall and an overabundance of tomatoes from the garden. I love to hear feedback...feel free to try it out and tell me what you think!

Ingredients:

1 16 oz box of orzo
1-2 lbs. sweet or spicy turkey sausage removed from casing
10-12 beefsteak tomatoes
1 medium vidalia onion chopped
1 red sweet bell pepper chopped
2 cloves of garic minced
1/2 cup butter melted
3/4 cup cubed mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1/4 cup sweet basil finely chopped
1/4 flat leaf parsley finely chopped

Set oven to 350. Thinly cut tops off of tomatoes. Scoop out pulp leaving 1/4- 1/2 in. thick shell reserving 1/4 cup pulp for mixture. Invert tomatoes onto a paper towel lined cookie sheet. Cook orzo according to package directions. Melt butter in a med. sauce pan and saute the onion, garlic and pepper add chopped herbs, salt & pepper set aside. Saute the turkey sausage till cooked through making sure to drain out all liquids. Drain orzo toss with butter and onion mixture, sausage, cheese and pulp. Fill tomatoes drizzle extra virgin olive oil and season with salt & pepper. bake for 10-12 minutes. If serving cold omit baking tomatoes.

So for quite a few years I have been hearing about this amazing Cheesecake Recipe my Father in Law (aka. dad) is known for. Recently I had the privilege of observing the master in action making this elusive cheesecake.

An Ode To My Mother

Cotton Candy Cupcakes

*Tell us more about you and your Candle business?
ok, well my candles are only the best totally organic candles on this earth...lol!
They are made from 100% organic materials
plants, vegetables, soy, bees wax and other natural products. If and when u buy a candle of mine you will see right away that they look completely different from any other candle you've ever seen...the texture is different. It's crystal looking. Really neat I might add.
They are 100% zinc free, lead free, and almost completely soot free. They are made with 100% cotton wicks!
They are cooler burning candles due to the fact that they are organic, so if you accidentally spill some on you or a child comes in contact with the wax...it cools off on contact with the skin. They will NOT be scalded like they would be with an ordinary candle. They clean up with hot soapy water if spills on your carpet or counter or another surface.
These candles are also better for people who have allergies.
Now I know I mentioned earlier that my candles were soot free. This means no soot on your candle rims, walls, ceiling, counters, furniture!! Promise!!
They come in over 100 awesome triple scented SCENTS. They are true to their scent all the way down to the last drop. They are even burning down to the last drop also.
One thing I must tell you about my candles is....THEY DO NOT HAVE ESSENTIAL OILS IN THEM!! Why u ask??? Essential oils is what makes the soot...so therefore, we did not put essential oils in our candles. I think it is due to the fact that a lot of people like myself keep a candle always burning for their loved one who has died or who may be serving in the armed forces at this very moment. I have 3 brothers who are in the service and 2 of them went to Iraq twice and I keep a candle burning for them the whole time they are there to signify that I REMEMBER them and the love they have for us and our country!!!

candle fundraising is one of my favorites...I actually have quite a few of those.
If you want to make allot of money for yourself though u must do it for a nonprofit organization!
I on the other hand enjoy just doing them for people who need an extra hand with bills and whatnot. There is a fellow New Iberia who lives not far from me who has cancer ..he is 35 and I had a fundraiser for him not long ago and raised about $2000 for him and his family. Now that is me just going out to some lil stores and selling candles in front of them! If there is a will there is a way!!

Louisiana Webs of Hope - Raising Awareness of Childhood Cancer

This is a serious blog, please read the whole post of this very important matter.

I have gotten to know a very wonderful lady by the name of Dawn. She is the creator of www.lawebsofhope.com. It is her passion to spread the word and give support to parents in Louisiana that have children suffering from Cancer. Sometimes just knowing that they have a shoulder to cry on and a support system can help ease a family's pain, if for just a moment. Please help support Dawn in her crusade against this awful disease. She hopes to one day start an organization in the name of a very special young boy by the name of Meechie Robinson that she came to know, who tragically lost his battle to Cancer. Though he is gone his memory lives on and those that love him continue the fight for a cure. please read more this courageous young man in her bio.

Childhood Cancer has been on the rise the past decade and there are some disturbing probabilities including environmental factors, such as pollutants tap water and radiation in the home emitted by electrical appliances.

I was born second in a family of eight children and well u can imagine how often we went to the Dr. Well, one day when I was a little girl say round 6 or so I can remember going to the Dr. to get my vaccines. There was a Nurse there to give the to me named Mrs. Bonnie. She told me to look at the beautiful bluebird on the ceiling and pop there she went with the needle into my arm...and guess what??? It didn't hurt. I was amazed ever since and she was my Idol..I wanted to be just like her. So therefore, that is why I became a Nurse. I love taking care of people It is my passion. You can ask anyone I know and they will tell ya...Dawn is the care giver. It's in my bones. I have been a Nurse since 1993. Wow, it seems like yesterday!
I suppose it was about 4 years ago I was surfing the net and myspace and I came across a page I fell in love with called Kids Cancer Crusade. I got to know the girl who ran it and begged her to help in some sort of way...so she let me update some of the kids pages on there...this is how I came to know the real meaning of what it is like to have a child that has cancer. Let me tell u guys....these are some of the strongest lil people you will ever meet in your lifetime. I kept up with this for about 2 years. I decided in those 2 years that that wasn't quite enough I wanted to do more so I had a benefit each year for them and collected toys and stamps and games and pajamas and hats and books....anything you could think of to keep these lil people happy when they were in the hospital for a long stay or when it was there birthday or some other special occasion. I even got to visit one of the children and low and behold you know I fell in love with them. I visited him a couple times and Unfortunately the last time I visited him was at his poor lil funeral. He was just about to make 8 and we had a huge birthday celebration planned for him but he decided it was better to share that experience with God up in Heaven looking down upon us all. Oh how it was a sad lil funeral..He wanted to be a policeman when he grew up so their were honorary policeman standing there at his lil coffin and changing guard every half hour on the hour. It was beautiful. So to make a long story short , Meechie's mom, that was his name, and I decided we were going to make an honorary site for him and hopefully one day make an organization for childhood cancer just like the Susan B. Coleman foundation for Breast Cancer.

*You recently started Louisiana webs of Hope, ...please tell us more about your site and how people can get involved?
Well the site is mainly a site for children from Louisiana who have developed some sort of cancer and are or have gone through the treatments and trials and tribulations of therapy. This site is also a site for awareness and knowledge to keep people aware of the fact that Childhood Cancer is still the LEAST FUNDED Cancer of all the cancers in the world. These are our children...this could be your child...they are our future and we need to keep them alive and healthy to prosper and enjoy their lives!
I suppose the best way to get involved would be to go to my candle site and buy a sixteen ounce candle due to the fact that these are the ones that part of the proceeds goes to the children on the cancer website.
Now with that said, I also take donations at my home such as, new toys, books, dvds, pajamas, silly socks(talk of the hospital the sillier ther are....lol), hats( or their cold little heads), and stamps to mails these packages to them.
You can also go to the Lawebsofhope site and click on each child's page and their is a link to their care page there...if you go to their carepage you can leave them encouraging messages...but remember...some of these children have passed on to the next life so you may be speaking to their families....they too still NEED support!!!

*Can people from other states get involved as well?
Most definitely...anyone can get involved from anywhere...we are not limited to who gets involved...as a matter of fact I may talk to the other host and see if we can branch out a bit! ;-)

*What was the defining moment when you decided that you wanted to dedicate yourself to helping children with cancer and to raise awareness?
I have always wanted to work in Oncology (Cancer Medicine)!!
I suppose it was when I met all those sweet innocent little children from Kids Cancer Crusade and got to know then and their families so well, that it hit me...this could be me ...this could be my child!! I hate to see anyone suffer...much less an innocent little child. They are soo strong!! I suppose they themselves are quite the Idols for me!!

*How has being a nurse influenced you and your organization?
It has helped me in the sense that I know where to go and what to look for when people have questions about certain things. I knew exactly what I wanted to put on the site information wise because as a Nurse...these are the questions parents come to us with!

*What resources are available to parents that have a child with cancer?
OMG!! there are so many resources from hospitals to books to brochures to websites and an endless amount of support groups!
You can go almost anywhere on the web and find what you need information wise!!
My favorite and most knowledgeable sources that ACTUALLY DO give their funding to Childhood Cancer Reseach are St. Jude Children Hospital and Curesearch...these are featured on my site!!

*Do you know if there any new treatments that are available that parents should be aware of?
There are always new treatments out there ,but beware that new treatments also come with unknown reactions. I have a page on my site that goes over this thourouhly. It is so exciting and encouraging to a parent when they hear of new discoveries, but you must be aware of what you are doing to your children at the same time!!

*What types of cancer do children generally develop as opposed to adults?
The types of cancers that occur in children vary greatly from those seen in adults. They tend to occur in different parts of the body, they look different under the microscope and they respond differently to treatment. Cure rates for children are much higher than for most adult cancers and more than 70% of all children can now be completely cured.

Leukemias, brain and other nervous system tumours, lymphomas (lymph node cancers), bone cancers, soft tissue sarcomas, kidney cancers, eye cancers, and adrenal gland cancers are the most common cancers of children, while skin, prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers are the most common in adults.

The stage of growth and development is another important difference between adults and children; the immaturity of children's organ systems often has important treatment implications.

*Where do children with cancer go for treatment?
There are tx. centers all over the country and in just about every state!! I myself prefer that if you are going to choose a Hospital you go to St. Jude's children's Hospital or Cure Search! Again this is due to the fact that they do fund childhood cancer research!!

*Childhood Cancer has been on the rise the past decade, what are your thoughts on the cause of the unusual rise?
Well, in my opinion it is the rise in industrial plants and definitely here in Louisiana that is the case.
There is also so many new products out now that we really don't know that much about but we use them any ways. I would and am personally going back to the old ways of thinking. I am going ALL ORGANIC!! Too scared for my family to do anything less!! I love them too much!

*It’s hard to know what to say when a family member let alone a child is first told they have cancer.........what advice can you give to family and friends who want to help?
Ahh, that is a good question ...but as always the best answer is to listen and let them do the talking and always be there for them. Even if ur just in the room with them...that is enough..if they want to cry...just rub there back and console them that way. If they want to talk be there to listen and comfort and always encourage....nver under any circumstances give them a reason to stop hoping!!!!! HOPE is the reason we live!!!

*What is the best advice you can give to people who would like to start their own Charitable website/organization?
be patient...it takes time and lots of research and dedication. I really did this all on my own.... Noone helped me. Noone wanted to help. You see as much as it sounds like people would want to help in such a situation.....not many people stop and actually take the time to put the effort into helping other human beings!!

*I love your Etsy store name of “mediocXcore”, what was the meaning and conception behind the name?
medioXcore was coined after seeing a lot of genres of music and lifestyles get the "Xcore" treatment. There was the original hardXcore, emoXcore, even people using the term "appleXcore", plus a ton of others. I guess people thought words looked pretty cool that way. Well I thought that being mediocre was pretty hardcore, thus medioXcore was born.

*Question for Angie, What is your inspiration behind your lovely creations, such as your hand painted Trinket boxes and shabby chic crocheted hair accessories?
I'm a total sucker for hair accessories. Everyday I've got a bow clip or headband in my hair, so I figured why not make my own? The ideas for the trinket boxes mostly come from stuff I like. I love gnomes so I thought a gnome box would be cute. I also get ideas from different stationery. I just love cutesy things.

*Question for Megan, What is your inspiration behind the name, poetry and artwork of your Viva Invierno Zine?
My zine is called Viva Invierno, which I chose because winter is my favorite season. I get a lot done in winter. My goal with my writing is to present a snapshot in words. I want to create a scene that will put you in the middle of where I was standing and make you see and feel everything that is going on.

*Question for Chris, What is your inspiration behind your Photographic prints, please expound on your love of making things with light?
Chris loves to photograph nature, especially waterfalls and mountain scenes. He also likes experimenting with night-time photography to make swirls and loops of bright electric light. One of his favorite techniques is using a delayed shutter-release and twirling the camera by the strap in the middle of a fireworks show or carnival and seeing what shows up!

*What type of materials are used when making your unique creations?
My favorite material is felt. It's my best friend! haha I use felt and buttons for my pouches. For the trinket boxes I use unfinished wood boxes, stationery, glue and acrylic paint. And for my hair clips I use yarn, buttons and barrettes.

*All three of you make some very unique creations, have any of you studied or are currently studying art?
Angie: Sadly, I have not studied art. I consider myself to have bursts of creativity, but I don't consider myself to be an artist in any sense. It's all in the name of fun for me!

Megan: I've taken art classes, but after the last college art teacher I had said my drawing style looked like that of an insane person, I decided I was done with that stuff. I've taken photography classes, but since I like "toy" cameras, like Holgas, the best, a lot of the proper training goes out the window when you use those. It's more fun to make your own rules and see what you come up.

*A very Etsy question....what is your most prized handmade possession?
I'd have to say the red heart pillow my boyfriend made for me for our anniversary. To save money, we decided to give each other something handmade. His grandma is a sewing queen, so she helped him. It's the cutest thing ever.

*What are your goals for the future?
I've been taking cake decorating classes, so I'd like to get more into cake decorating.
I've started a chapter of Free Cakes For Kids (www.freecakesforkidscovina.com) and I'm working hard on spreading the word. Of course, I'll continue my crafting. I just want to make people smile with my creations.

Just get out there and do it! I hesitated for a long time with selling my stuff. I didn't think anyone would like it, let alone buy it! But I've received a lot of wonderful and supportive feedback that now I only wish I started sooner!

of cupcake? ;)
I found a cinnamon toast cupcake recipe a few weeks ago and tried it out. Those were the most delicious cupcakes I've ever had! Super yummy!

*Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a mother of three beautiful yet crazy children; Devon 15, Danika 11, and Cameron 7. I have been married for 11 years and still get butterflies when I see my husband walk into the room. I am a vegetarian whom loves animals and I am actively involved with PETA. I am currently in college pursuing a degree in special education and I have worked as a resource specialist for the Corona Norco school district for three years. I am also very into music and love going to shows, music has always played an important roll in my life and recently started pursuing my childhood dream of being a pin up model.

*How did you discover the world of pinup modeling?
I have always been a fan of classic pinups, Marilyn Monroe, Yvonne DiCarlo their grace and classic beauty has always caught my attention and fascinated me as a teenager. last year I finally decided that I would look into the pin up modeling world and did a photo shoot (which wasn't very lovely) but feel in love with being in front of the camera. I entered the Kitten Koffin Zombies pin up calendar contest and somehow won the title of Miss September 2009. after that win I entered other smaller contests just for fun and started modeling for companies such as Vintage Vixxen by Miss Vicky M.

*Does your pinup persona carry into your everyday life?
I feel like it does to some extent, I do dress pin up in vintage to work on most days. I love doing my hair and makeup in vintage styles. but I also can go out on a limb and dress like a punk rock girl. piPer ruBie is kind of like an alter ego at times, i guess.

*What is your favorite style to model?
I will try it all - he he - my favorite are pinup and punk/alternative styles but I am open to try almost anything once.

*What is your greatest inspiration?
When it comes to modeling Marilyn Monroe's and Yvonne DiCarlo’s lives have fascinated since I was a child and they are my biggest inspiration.

When it comes to life my son Cameron inspires me. He suffers from autism and his daily struggle to continue trying things that scare and frustrate him inspires me to continue pursuing my dreams.

*What is your life’s ambition?
I have always wanted to help children with disabilities. I am pursuing this dream currently and have worked and volunteered in special ed since high school.

*Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
I have been doing some modeling for Vintage Vixxen, on the modeling front. I have also recently done some shoots for Zombie Girl hair accessories. I am very excited to be modeling your aprons - I love them, they are great!! I am also involved in the Dead Man's Drive Pinup contest in October.

*What is your greatest inspiration when designing your jewels?
FOOD!! I love food!! All types! Especially SWEETS!! And since I cant really
eat too much of them all the time, I make them into necklaces, key chains and
cell phone charms so I can carry them around with me all the time and drool
over them at work! hehehe

*What is your life?s ambition?
To do my best at succeeding and making all the dreams I have for myself as
well as my family and friends come true!

*Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully a successful banker, maybe a bank manager. And doing what I love

Not at the moment but I just finished up a big one. The Baldwin Lions Club
just had their First Annual Just for Fun Dog Show, and I made little dog

*What is one thing that not many people know about you that you would like to share?
I am a member of the Baldwin Lions and we work to raise money for people
with Diabetes as well as people who have trouble with their eye sight. We raise
money, as well as donate eye glasses to other countries. We also visit the
local hospitals around the holidays and give all the patients hand made cards
that are made by children in the area. It is wonderful and so rewarding to
be part of such a wonderful club!

Short, Sweet and Simple

Bernie is the quintessential Rockabilly gal! Bernie truly lives the Rockabilly lifestyle From head to toe, the way she dresses,the music she listens to, her hair and makeup, she even managed to snag herself a Rockabilly Cat himself! Her husband Rockabilly musician Levi Dexter is not only a talented musical artistic but photographs Bernie exclusively and I must say they make a great team.
Bernie takes her career very seriously that is why I was so very honored when she agreed to model one of my aprons Bernie is really wonderful to work with. With all her popularity she has managed to still stay a sweet and down to earth gal!

*How did you discover the world of pinup modeling?
I was a make up artist , hair dresser & wardrobe person on photo shoots & i was always being asked to show the models how to pose.
heheee..

*How does your pinup persona carry into your everyday life?
Well i am the same. i mean i am not hard to spot. your average rockabilly girl.
most of the time i have a ponytail & dungarees on.

It really hasn't. the pin up girl is the girl next door who looks like she won't, but DOES pose suggestively.

*I love that your husband is also your exclusive photographer....what would be your favorite & least favorite part of working with your husband all the time?
It is wonderful. i honestly have no complaints. we are best friends. he is super fun & really knows where i am coming
from. we are influenced by the same things . Music, movies ect...

*What is your greatest inspiration?
Rockabilly music. i mean from the 1950s. i envision shoots & scenes when i hear it!

*What is your life?s ambition?
To be immortal.

*Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
With a 2 year old!

*Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
I am working on new projects all the time. my most exciting is working with Olivia.

Her bows have quite the following and been featured on pin-up model Brenda Lee for a recent Cupcake Provocateur` photo shoot among countless other pin-up models such as Bernie Dexter and Dayna Delux. Her bows are available in shops around the world from the Good old USA to our friends in Switzerland! Eva is a self made entrepreneur and has created some of the best hair accessories out there! Her designs truly stand on their own. Eva is a very ambitious DIY gal, and being super sweet and easy to work with doesn't hurt either! And she was sweet enough to model one of my aprons in the above pic :)

*How did you discover your talent of making such unique hair accessories?
When I was pregnant with my daughter who is now almost 3 I saw all of
these cute bows for little ones and fell in love. I had to start making
them.A friend of mine saw them and decided she needed them as well. It just escalated from there.

*What was your inspiration to create Little Lily Designs?
Truly my love for bows! Everyone needs one in their hair.

*What is your life's ambition for yourself and Little Lily Designs?
Right now I am where I want to be. Of course there is always room for
growth but, I am proud of what this little business has become.

*Do you plan on launching any other creations aside from your amazing hair accessories?
Right now I really am focusing on my bows! I do plan on
possibly coming out with coordinating bows for some of my shops! They
will be a little different than my normal bows. Be on the look out!

*Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
Actually, I am getting ready to have a booth at the car show at Viva
Las Vegas 2009 so all of my focus has been on that and my current orders.

*What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
Aside from my children and great marriage honestly this business. I work very hard at it and take great pride in my work!!

*What is one thing that not many people know about you that you would like to share?
I am a photographer on the side. I have been taking pictures since
I was very young and love it! I finally was able to afford a professional
camera this past year and have been taking photos of models and doing

I had the opportunity to get to know pin-up model Brenda Lee when she was working with Eva from EML Photos for a shoot to model one of my aprons. Brenda embraces the pin-up lifestyle from A-Z, she is a mom that loves to cook and take care of her children, and agrees that there is nothing wrong with looking cute doing it! She is truly a pleasure to work with and a lovely kind hearted gal! I learned allot about her doing this feature and I admire her for staying such a strong and beautiful person, a person that I am sure her mother would be proud of.

*I love the “Ballad of Brenda Lee” that you have on Modelmayhem.com, it sounds like you were born to be a pin-up model literally?
Well, being a pin-up is who I am. Its my whole lifestyle. I mean I wake up every day and listen to oldies and rock n roll, crank up Mr. Cash any chance I get, and put on my red lipstick and pencil skirts and head off to my fabulous job. I literally get asked on a daily basis if I am going to a 50’s event or if I am in costume for some reason. I have never really followed trends but I am noticing that this style is becoming quite the trend, so I am excited that it is being more accepted and admired.

*Your mother was a Cabaret Singer...what was it like being on tour with your mother growing up?
My mother was fabulous. She was such an inspiration. We traveled a lot and I went to a lot of different schools but it helped me become the outgoing person I am today. I had to always make new friends and adapt to change and I truly believe that is why I am so outgoing and embrace the changes in life that are brought upon me on a daily basis. I am very fortunate that I have my mom’s music to listen to and look back on to keep her legacy alive. One day I hope to be able to get up on stage and sing a song in my mother’s memory. Her favorites were Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee.

*What a fascinating childhood?
My childhood was totally fascinating. I mean most of my childhood was in the Bay Area, which was a blessing. It is so pretty and fashion in the Bay is so diverse so I was able to learn a lot. I grew up with 4 awesome big brothers and I guess that helped keep be super girly. I was always trying to get their attention and dragging them to my dance recitals and making them put on talent shows with me!

*How did you discover the world of Pin-up modeling?
I had a photographer actually take my picture one day at a car show, and someone mentioned the likeness of my style to the old WWII pin-ups so I researched it and became more fascinated with the classy pin-ups of the past and decided to pursue it more.

*Does your Pin-up persona carry into your everyday life?
Oh yes in every way. That is why it is such a pleasure to work with you because when I am cooking homemade potpies or Cupcakes at home, I get to look stunning and glamorous in your aprons! I love to cook, and I believe even in the kitchen you need to accessorize properly. You will see in a lot of the photos and concepts I create for you, that is me, Brenda Lee, every day.

*What is your favorite style to model?
Pin-Up of course.

*What is your greatest inspiration?
My greatest inspiration is my children. They are a reflection of me and I want to be able to leave a legacy for them to remember. I want to teach them that true beauty comes from within and it resonates for the whole world to see.

*What is your life’s ambition?
My life’s ambition is to learn and continue growing as a person. I want to live, laugh and love, (how cheesy but true). I am reading a book right now called The Game of Life, and I really love it. I want to be happy and make others around me happy and joyful. My goal is to retire one day and see my little one grow up to be happy, productive, successful adults.

*Do you have any current projects you are working on at the moment?
I am always working on something. I just finished a calendar shoot for the troops, and I am working on updating some Bandit Clothing Catalog items. Her summer playsuits are just divine and fun. I am also going to be working on your Holiday aprons, so I am totally excited about that.

*What is one thing that not many people know about you that you would like to share?
I am now doing stylist work. Teaching pretty ladies how to be a pin-up and put the look together. It is so much fun; I really enjoy the work that I do.

*Three words that best describe yourself?
Emotional, Funny, and Loving!

*A question for all my cupcake lovers......what is your favorite type of cupcake? ;)
Are you kidding me! All cupcakes are my favorite!! I do love cherry and chocolate together though!

In the Begining there Were Cupcakes!

I am a self described baking addict and lover of all thing vintage....so I combined the two! I make specialty cupcakes and vintage and retro inspired aprons. I figure why not look cute while you bake? Although my aprons are not always worn in the kitchen......I will save that for a later post!
